National Freelancers Day 2017 promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a packed schedule of industry experts providing invaluable advice and support through a series of comprehensive seminars, masterclasses and workshops.

Whatever your industry, passion or age, this year’s NFD has something for you. Following three strands – student, new to freelancing and experienced freelancers – the day will include a host of tailor-made sessions covering everything you need to know about launching and running a stimulating and successful freelance business.

One such session will be run by Kelly Gilmour-Grassam, a freelance copywriter and winner of IPSE’s Aspire Freelancer of the Year Award in 2015. Kelly started freelance copywriting whilst at university, balancing the work alongside her studies and two waitressing jobs.

Upon graduating, she continued freelancing to fund her way around South America, before going full time on her return. Now she is the director of the award-winning copywriting agency Making You Content in Manchester. Among a diverse portfolio Kelly has worked with many high-profile clients including the NHS and Pizza Express.

Kelly will be drawing on her experiences of becoming freelance to give useful advice to those considering the merits of self-employment.

Kelly said: “I’ll be talking about some of the barriers to getting started and when it’s a good time to make the leap to self-employment. Something I have always felt passionately about is starting when you’re young, before you’ve got responsibilities. I’ll be talking about things that I wish I had known before I started out.

“It will be relevant to anyone thinking about embarking on a freelance career, especially young people – graduates and students who are thinking of going down that route.

“I think it’s quite hard to visualise your own journey unless you can relate to people who’ve been there and done that. Hopefully, by sharing practical tips on my experiences and what I wish I’d known when I set up, it will help them develop the courage to take that leap.”

Kelly will be speaking on a panel with other freelancers from 15.45 – 16.15.
